10/30 San Angelo SP

We achieved part (about 1/20!) of a long-term goal on our way out to San Angelo State Park. We made a few stops around Schulenburg to visit a couple of the painted churches.

We arrived just in time for a lovely moonrise over O. C. Fisher lake - a reservoir off of the Concho River.

The full moon was spectacular even if it did steal a bit of the stars' thunder! We basked in the campfire's warm glow and craned our necks to admire the view above.

Our early morning walk surprised a pair of porcupines! We've never seen these in Texas before.
The big draw here (for us anyway) is that San Angelo is home to part of the state's bison and longhorn herds! The animals graze in the park, but are also fed once a day which gives the rangers a chance to check on the herds.

We hiked a section of the Roadrunner trail before heading over to the north unit of the park to hike the Dinosaur trail. Tracks from the Permian period can be seen in the bed of a (mostly dry) wash. While they aren't dinosaurs, impressions of Eryops and synapsis - ancient, pre-dinosaur reptiles - can be seen.
After a full morning of hiking we went into San Angelo to see the International Water Lily Collection. Since the area had freezing rain just the other day, we had managed our expectations. The caution was unnecessary as the gardens were fantastic!

All in all, a wonderful weekend of bison, exotic water gardens, campfires, and night skies.
